Homemade Headboard
The basic principles for this are usually the same: try and remove whatever fabric is there right now, trace out that shape onto your new fabric, and then try and replace it in the same method that was used before. If you are just upholstering rather than RE-upholstering, then what you will have to do is buy some foam padding, glue that onto your surface, stretch fabric over it, and secure it down tight with staples. I recently did a reupholstery project, feel free to ask me any questions about it: https://www.hometalk.com/diy/living-room/furniture/old-gross-couch-gets-a-royal-purple-makeover-35158694

DIY Upholstered Headboard
Remove all fabric, nails or any staples if your head board has any thing on it. You can re use the foam if it has some already. If not you will have to buy foam the same size as your head board. You will also need fabric of your choosing, staple gun if you can use one or small nails.
You lay the foam on the head board ( you can use a bit of two way tape to keep it place if you want. Put the new fabric on top of the foam and turn over carefully. You will now staple or nail the fabric to the back of head board ,pull fabric taunt, staple or nail a few at the top and then the bottom, then one on the side and then the other side. Check the front to see if it looks nice and if it does pull fabric and keep stapling or nailing the fabric until it is all done. You can cover the back of the head board with a thin piece of foam and fabric if you wish to have a finished look. Easy job to do.
Good Luck
