How to keep weeds off a sloped garden? Fabric? build steps? Help!

Hi, I have a very long, and sloped garden area. After clearing it, I planted about 20 hostas (no, they are not touching each other), lilies, roses, and one area is all ground cover. I am now 70 with lots of health issues and I cannot navigate the intensity of the slope to weed any more. Dollars are an issue so I do not want to hire landscapers. I have a dog and do not want to use pesticide. It would be major to lay garden fabric-physically. And to put steps in several areas also challenging. It is awful getting older-gardening is my passion! Thanks for any ideas.

LOTS of mulch of one kind or another. Weed cloth first is a good option, so is heavy layers of newspaper under the mulch. A lot depends on how steep the sloped area is and how much "traffic" you get in it.

      Hi Pat,

This area is at least 20 feet long, starts at the road and is a very steep incline. No traffic except me trying to weed. I could not take care of the top portion last year and huge grass clumps have invaded, plus regular weeds. . I was thinking of papers down first, then straw or hay-not pretty but maybe will keep me off the slope for this year?

Thanks for the help; I appreciate it.

you can lay down newspapers and use that for mulch. It will break down and be good for the soil. It is not too expensive especially if you have neighbor, family, or friends you can get it from.

Thanks Kari for the help. Putting newspapers down first, then straw or hay-not pretty-but maybe will keep me off this slope for this growing season. Fortunately my lilies, roses, and half of my hostas are half way down on the slope and I can tend to those. But the slope starts at the road and is a very steep incline with no flat spots to stand. Very difficult to kneel down & then I keep slipping down, more difficult to get up!

I appreciate the time you took to answer.

      Thanks-Barb

You can try putting vinegar and water 50/50 a dab of dish soap and a dab of salt but it can not be put on anything else as it will kill that to

newspaper and /or mulch would do the trick, but you will need to keep adding as the seasons go on they will break down.

But so ugly with just the newspapers. I had something like this and chose to semi-terrace it wih uneven rows of rocks AFTER putting down a weed barrier and mulching it. The rocks sort of keep the mulch from just washing down the slope. Also, use CYPRUS mulch. It weaves itself together and doesn;t wash down the slope like the hardwood mulches do.

Grass cloth from Lowes or Home Depot.

    Hi Janet,

This is a regular thing I do to manage weeds & it works. Trouble is I cannot navigate this slope to even do this. I was thinking of putting papers down and then straw or hay. Not looking too pretty, but maybe will help to keep out weeds. My area is about 20 feet long, and is very steep. It goes up to the road and I can sit to pull some weeds, but if I move down even a little bit, I chance injury, plus getting up is difficult.

    Thanks for the help-good advice!
