This depends on what zone you're in and how the weather is behaving. Once you/we know that, we can probably give a more definitive answer.
That depends totally on where you live. I buy the bargain plants at Lowes for between 50 cents & $3.00 and bring them back to life. I always hate to see any of nature's beautiful plants die. I've had great luck bringing them back to beautiful flowers but I live in Lee County, Florida.
This is what I tell everyone with this question---- go to your local nursery and see what they are selling as the basis for your garden selections. They only sell what is guaranteed to grow well in your region and their sales pros can give you great ideas! I also recommend riding around your community and taking photos of successful gardens to use as examples.
Mariolds and some petunias will work, but it is still pretty cold at night. I would suggest waiting a couple of weeks when the threat of freezing temps at night are past.
