Use a heat gun to make the glue soft, then scrape off or you may need to use something like GooGone to get the remainder off.
That adhesive is really hard to remove. I am not sure it can be done leaving the hardwood in good condition. I would suggest going to a flooring store (not a big box store) and asking them for quidance.
start with sorting it with goo gone, then scrape it ,then if need be use a heat gun
If is is sandable, scrape it then belt sand it with the grain. If you have good ventilation, make yourself a mixture, equal mixture to Formbys funiture refinisher, for 1/3 the price. He used to use Alcohol, mineral spirits, and (MEK illegal now) I believe that it is Zylyne. Loke on the can, it tells you. You might try a very small can first before you invest.
I had this problem in our last house. It was too much to sand off without gumming up the sander. I went to a flooring supplier and they . recommended a product that came in a gallon jug. I applied a section at a time, let it sit for a few minutes, and used a large scraper. It took time and elbow grease to get the floors to a point that the sander would take care of the rest. I never thought the floors would be salvageable, but they turned out so beautiful, I cried when I saw them. Check with a flooring supplier.
