We use nail filler much like a crayon..they come in colors but can be smoothed and painted over if needed.
JKW, I haven't found any putty to be better than another. Just don't get wood filler. The one I do like though, has a purple color that dries to white so you know when you can do your paint touch up.
Can even use Toothpaste if pushed.......
DAP makes a nice little tube of putty that has a little putty scraper at the end of it especially for nail holes. It is called Nail Hole filler and sells for about 3 dollars in home center and hardware type stores
I use drywall joint compound but a product called "spackle" will work well too.
