Depending on the size, maybe a soup turine (sp) or other serving dish....if smaller, a sugar bowl?
I want to say transfer wear...it was popular in ww2 as giftware for the service men to take home to thier honeys. Japanese may be chinese. Is there a makers mark on the bottom? If not it may be a reproduction.
If there are markings on the bottom you may be able to look it up on the internet
So many different manufacturers of Blue Willow. You need to check the bottom for any makers marks or post a photo of the the bottom marks. Do a Google search for the maker.
It looks like Japanese blue transfer willowware. Go to the ebay site and put JAPANESE TRANSFERWARE in the search box. Good luck.

Willow Ware?
Without knowing the dimensions it could be a soup tureen or a serving bowl. It is most decidedly Blue Willow, which is the oldest continuing china pattern in the world. At one time there were as many as 116 different manufacturers in many, many countries. At this time, there are less than 6 companies making this ever-popular pattern, Homer Laughlin in the United States and Johnson Brothers in England, along with a few others.
If you can post a photo of the bottom so any markings or incised symbols can be seen, I could tell you much more. Dimensions would be helpful, too.
A butter dish
I have some of this pattern China in an old China cabinet that I have.I don't have one shaped like that, I do have sugar bowl, it round with a lid. Does this have a lid?
Thanks
It definitely looks like Blue Willow and a tureen of some kind. I have a huge collection of blue willow from many different makers. It is not a butter dish which would be very shallow on the bottom with a larger cover. My daughter collects pink willow. the Kovals have a book on china marks. It is not complete but is a great help to those who collect china.
You might also try Replacements.com They have alot of china patterns that you can compare to.
