hang a bright colored picture or tapestry on the wall
If you ant to over the whole wall, use removable wallpaper or fabric (dipped in liquid starch to use as glue). I would hang large poster or picture that goes with both rooms.
You could use temporary wallpaper. It comes right off when you are done renting the space.
I’m blinded by the lights. Are they ceiling fixtures against the wall?
Anyway, First I’d ask the landlord if I could put up a real backsplash.
If not, I’d get a large 48 x 96 sheet of foam board from U-line ($24) and cut to fit the area And attach it to the wall. That will leave you approximate four holes to fill when you leave. To that I would glue/tape very cool “Laminated thermoplastic panels” that made me smile.
Personally, I’d also try to mellow the lights. If you can’t change them, or if they’re not dimmable, I’d sort of cover them. attached is an interesting light, which could be faked with a little bit of 1” wood framing and a length of stubby linen the same color as the walls. Held up by a couple of L-brackets. Oops Two more holes at the top of the wall, but easily remedied.
Re the photo, this is a sconce on Lumens.com. But clean, dramatic and easy to copy.
They make peel and stick mirror tiles in many modern shapes/configurations just for this purpose.
You could make up a frame and box it in with mdf and put any kind of finish on it you like. You could use a mural, various wall panels which will be light in weight and as bright as you want.
Stretch a wall tapestry into the space.... https://www.twinkledeals.com/wall-tapestry-cc224/
Have fun with your project. Would love to see the finished adventure.

There are also some really cute wall clings you can get in all different sizes, so you could also go with something like that to add interest.
