most of the time, it’s best to get 3 estiments
from different contractors. Have them evaluate, and cost out the job for you On the pool. Both to fix or fill in. That’s your biggest issue. Over grown yard, weed wack it down,,mow.
The yard is an easy but time consuming project but the pool can be very expensive to repaint, hole fill or just fill in and make flat for a small patio. Check Angie's list for contractors. You could ask a neighbor who has a pool what they think or who they might suggest.
Personally, I would always keep a pool. But then I don't mind doing the daily cleaning and maintenance required.... so its up to you. Great exercise and relaxing. Yard, if you can hire a company to come in a whip it back into shape and then you maintain it.
If you decide you don't want the pool (either because it is too expensive to fix or you don't want the maintenance) you could use part of it to create a water feature/koi pond in your yard. Depending on how large the yard is and how deep your pockets are, it will either take paying a professional to get it cleaned up quickly or taking your time to clean it up, one square yard at a time! When you get it cleaned up and see what is going to stay - trees, bushes, hidden pockets of flowers - you can design your backyard oasis to suit yourself.
youve heard the phrase it has to meet code? The codes can be different based on location. The contractor (s). Should be familiar them..the Codes are about safety issues....depth of concrete, mix of concrete, any power lines for the pools heater. Codes change as new technology evolves, and the main reason for them is to keep people safe. some areas you might need a permit to have the work done. The contractors are more familiar on the how to get that. Your codes for pools may be different than mine.
You can can do a few thing to help the budget...the clean up mostly. Any construction I’ve had done is a bit, well more than a bit messy....
