Great idea or use a pretty planter ( may look nicer then a bucket) but that’s sometimes the only way I get my tomatoes. Makes it more convenient and easier to keep an eye especially if you have lots of critters in your area. Add some herbs to the planter, mix it up a little.
I would suggest looking online. From what I am seeing pretty much most vegetables can be grown in planters or buckets.
Tomatoes, peppers, beans...or even a variety of herbs! Just be sure to keep them well watered since plants will dry out more quickly than if they were planted in the ground.
I think it’s a good idea, container gardening
Some veggies do well in containers. Here are a couple helpful sites -

I get the cheaper plastic huge planters at Home Depot for my veggies that I grow by the house. I put six leaf lettuce plants and a pepper plant in the middle of one and ended up with five foot tall lettuce plants before they finally bolted in October. I put pepper plants in one, and a tomato plant in the other. I use ten to twelve inch pots for my herbs, but I have also used window boxes for herbs, too. I had good luck last year. I did find the lettuce did better if it didn't get much afternoon sun, I think that is how it survived until October without bolting. Hubby made trays with good castors to go under the large pots so that we could move them around if necessary. We used thick marine plywood and good metal and rubber castors, not the plastic ones like you get on the ones the stores sell. You can get a small cart at Home Depot or Aldies that will hold your gardening tools, and the top has a kneeling pad you can take off, or use it as a seat and just move from plant to plant. I use my cracked garbage cans for potatoes. Hubby loves to see the plants grow, but can't make it up the two steep tiers to the veggie garden, so I have all kinds of potted vegetables, herbs, strawberries and flowers at the house level for him. Everyone calls our front walk and driveway our jungle.
