If using paint on bare metal, it is important to use a primer first, however there are some brand of metal paint ( such as "Hammeright" which do not require primer. My advice would be to check the paint tin instructions.
If the old surface is in good shape give them a thorough cleaning with a de-greaser rinse them and paint with a good quality semi gloss paint. If the finish is not that good sand with a hand sander first then follow the same directions.
