do you want annuals, perennials???For the correct advice what exactly do you want to accomplish
I would dig out the grass that is there. Make either a stepping stone walk way to the gate and plant flowers along the walkway.
I agree about the stepping path flanked with two flower beds. I would add some hostas mixed in with the flowers.
Perfect place for a new deck. I would clean up the area, level it so that it drains away from the house and build a deck. If you didn't want to go the length of the house- make a deck by the door and use the empty space for a nice flower garden with perannuals. Hostas would look nice!
A deck with a screened in sun room, sit out in the evening of early am and enjoy nature minus the bugs.
I notice the gate in the back...if you use it, make sure whatever you put in doesn't hinder its function. For example, if you bring the lawnmower through there from the backyard to the front, don't plant fragile flowers or narrow the path too much. Account for whatever space in front of the gate you'll need for it to swing open.
I also notice the electric meter on the side of the house. Don't block access to it.
I would level the surface (putting in a drain tile to relocate water away from your foundation) and put in a river rock pathway with some of those awesome logs in the pic as "stepping stones" or "pavers", setting them almost touching instead of spread apart.
Some more pictures and information would help ...is that a gate at the end? Do you walk through this area? Is this a drainage ditch when it rains? Does water puddle there? The easiest thing would be to smooth out, cover with landscaping fabric, put stepping stones as a path, mulch the rest and put in pots of annuals. Doesn't look like you have much usable soil for plants. If you want plants you may need to dig out the junk, level and replace with at least 10" of good soil. Nice pots eliminate the need for digging and replacing oil.
I would add a deck and maybe a screened in porch. I would also add flowers or maybe a tree there.
