Here are some uses and types of flagstone. It's a pretty stone to work with.

treat the flagstone as you would any paver, decide if you want large spaces in between or have the stones work like a jigsaw puzzle. The trick is to have a good and solid base of sand or chips and dust tamped down. If you want to control weeds, lay a cardboard layer, then landscape fabric then the base...a product called polymeric sand could be used as the base and in the cracks (it will harden to a cement like consistency) each stone should be levelled as you go.
