After planting always sprinkle baby powder around base of plant and dust the leaves a bit with it. It keeps ants and other crawlies from sucking the sweetness out of the plant.

I use Bayer rose food that I get at Home Depot. One rose bush covers the end of the house!
I always picked up some "brake filings" from a local auto repair shop. This is the filings that come from the brake lathe when cutting brake rotors.
Roses love iron and this is a cheap way to feed them.
