What size is the table top? I can possibly offer some recommendation but would need to know the size.
Remove any peeling veneer, fill in low spots, prime, and paint. If it's 4' diameter you can get some thin plywood veneer and glue it on. Stain and seal.
B.robillard51, do everything William said with these extra steps: Give the glued top at least a day to cure before you stain it. Consider using Unicorn SPiT, a product that is a stain, a paint and a gel. Seal the paint with an oil-based sealer. You will have a gorgeous, unique table you can use or sell. Best wishes ☺️
I second the Unicorn SPiT! It is my all-time favourite thing to play with! If you'e going to use it for a kitchen table, because it will be getting wet, you have to make sure you add either a couple coats of exterior poly or do an epoxy finish. In all cases, your finishing coat of sealer must be oil-based.
Stainable wood putty to fill the low spots.
Agree with William above!
