I actually like the cedar paneling. The fireplace is lovely. I think the room needs an infusion of color. I would put a wood flooring in, with a large patterned or oriental area rug to fill as much of the space as possible. Use the butter color / orange shades as an accent color for the room. Switch to off white or white sheers with butter colored curtain toppers (hang high so they are not really covering the window) . This will let in more light. Carry this color thru to lamps, candles, and throw pillows. Sit your plants in flowerpots / urns that have this color. Over the fireplace a large painting / print in which the gold / butter color dominates will help tie it together. You want to meld these two areas together, not treat them as distinct rooms. I like the wood tones on the walls as they are warm, and authentic. This looks like REAL wood which is rare. IT also is a no maintenance wall treatment. For the fireplace a few accents that coordinate are better than a slew of objects. An accent chair in this butter color may also help with the theme.
You have the right idea with white washing but you don't need to use white paint. Take one of the lighter tones from the fireplace and use that color. It will bring the room together.
William is right you are on the right track. I am doing the same thing. The only thing I would suggest is to take some paint an ounce or two will work add your water an ounce at a time and try it on a hidden spot like a corner. That way you will get the mixture to your liking. I ended up mixing 1 gal. of paint to 1/2 gal. water. Adding more water lightens the thickness of paint. Good luck I am loving the way mine is turning out. I am working with very rough dark barn board. Again have fun.
Our basement was this paneling we painted it an eggshell color. Brightens the room and truly an update.Made the room look bigger also.
My barn wood was also very dark and very rough. I ended up mixing 1 gal. paint to 4 quarts water did a great job. I painted the trim in the room straight paint. I am so happy with it. My barn wood was also very dark and very rough. I ended up mixing 1 gal. paint to 4 quarts water did a great job. I painted the trim in the room straight paint. I am so happy with it. I decided to do something with the hollow core doors too. I got 1x3 and trimmed the doors with 4 sections. I did some checking back to when my house was built way way back in the 1800's and the doors looked something like that and then also pained them white also. I really love the way it all turned out. Next project kitchen paint cabinets, new floor, and paint everything.
Maybe talk to the paint people at the home improvement store. I don’t think cedar takes paint very well.
