Add some wood to the ceiling! How cute that would look in a cottage style home. If can be done for about 100-150.00 if you do it yourself. Menards/Home Depot/Lowes sell packages of wood strips for ceilings. Looks like bead board. Fairly easy to install. You can buy unfinished or primed.
I would remove the popcorn ceiling and replace it with bead board to keep the cottage style look.

Kathy has the right idea.... if the ceiling has been patched... then removing the popcorn and the patch before you install either bead board or a bead board paneling (or a thinner drywall sheet) would be the best idea for an even application.
