  • Cheap, easy solution is to purchase patio umbrellas. Next would be to use a sail shade. Another option would be a pergola, and lastly a complete patio cover. Price out each in your area and then decide what you want to do.

Hi Patricia. You could purchase a Gazebo to put up for shade. You could also plant a shade tree if there is room in your yard. It would take a few years to provide shade.

there is actually shade cloth in varied amounts of sun blocking strengths. I have used it on a diy pvc cube frame for a small dog I was pet sitting for a few weeks. I’ve also used it over a section of the low tunnel hoop house for my house plants to acclimate to iowa spring. I have also made a square of pvc pipe and added legs and shade cloth as a roof. It’s held on with clips that go around pipe then snap down to grab the shade cloth.

Most of the large home improvement stores have free standing pergola structures.. Walmart does too... some of them have canvas tops or inserts to provide shade.... and when it needs to be replaced your could use shade cloth (garden depts... by the foot) or replace with more canvas (out door type)

You could put up a seasonal awning or a retractable one. I like the retractable ones, you can pull them in if you have to.
