yes. you can use a metaled spray paint -They have hammered looks and anything from bronze to silver to oil rubbed. Available at Home Depot and I saw them as well on Amazon. Cost is about 6.00 a can
It would be easier to spray it with the specific paints now for hardware if you remove it first, but you could tape around the door and be REALLY careful.
yes, remove, clean and spray paint it with Rustomleum 2X for metal giving it two light coats allowing to dry inbetween,then spray a clear protectant on it

Rustoleum oil rubbed bronze spray paint has a beautiful depth and subtle sparkle luster. My doorknobs finishs are wearing off ( looks awful) considering refinishing mine.
