Vinegar. That is what I use. I have a bunch of pets including a canary.
I have parrots also..and when I DID have carpet I used Simple Green....smells great and no one had any issues with it.
Simple Green is non-toxic. We use it in concentrate form in our shampooer. We put in one measure of the concentrate into the water holder. You can get it in concentrate form at Menards or the auto/camping area of Walmart. It works well and is non-toxic. Hope this helps. I am allergic to nearly all cleansers but this one is great!
I have 5 dogs, YES 5! I just can't turn them away!! But, my 80lb rot just recently had a UTI and the poor thing unhappily used the bathroom on my carpet. I pulled out the steam cleaner and used vinegar and water AND drops of Tea Tree oil. Not only does it clean the carpet but also leaves a wonderful smell behind. If not a fan of Tea Tree oil, you can try peppermint, lemon, lemongrass, lavender, and bergamot. These are just a few. Because I'm cleaning dog pee, I don't use the steam part UNTIL after I'm sure the spot is clean of pee. I normally give it a few days and check area. If good and needed, I'll go over with steam.
Yes, vinegar! It cuts grease, sanitizes, works great on set in stains too. I have a crawler so I'm always worried about him licking the floor (why?) Or something. And all of my boys (5) have eczema so I have to be super careful about what products we use. Vinegar can safely clean and sanitize every surface in your home
I use vinegar, 2 TEAspoons of Dr Bronner's Sal Soap (a little goes a long way!), and 10 drops of either peppermint or lemon oil (both have antibacterial properties like Tea Tree oil). The Sal Soap has a mutitude of uses, from laundry, dishwashing, window cleaner, etc. so it is worth buying a bottle. And it is so concentrated a bottle last forever - totally green and all natural.
DrBronners peppermint soap is excellent too ! I use it for everything..including flea killing.
I would investigate further before you use essential oils. Tea tree oil is toxic to dogs, even the fumes. It is possible that it could harm other animals. Have you tried cleaning with just water?
In a previous home, I "rented" a carpet extractor to "shampoo" the light ivory carpets. ("rented" in because my employer allowed employees to use extractors at no charge when not rented to customers or in use for their commercial cleaning jobs.) First year there I found my carpet had enough residual shampoo left from prior owners, that no new shampoo was needed, and I was rinsing, rinsing, rinsing to get both dirt and prior soap rinsed out. Since residual soap/shampoo acts as a magnet to dirt, including previously spot-treated areas, after the first time using the extractor, I always used only clear water to "clean" and then vinegar water as a rinse. I was still getting soapy water rinses after nearly 15 years of annual to semi-annual carpet cleanings! But that ivory carpet still looked AMAZINGLY clean, even after pets' and young grandchildren's accidents. Note: an extractor has strong suction to remove liquid with dirt, reducing drying time. This is the type used for cleaning commercial spaces with carpets.
Simple Green is so nontoxic you could drink it and it wouldn't hurt you. It is very concentrated so follow the directions or you'll be overwhelmed with suds.
