use Chalk paint and then a wax finish - or use ESP first them your paint - Or Rub down and prime - Undercoat - and then topcoat..
First, you should sand down to the actual wood. I am assuming it either has a clear varnish or stain on it. For the paint to adhere to the wood, you need to get down to the actual wood before painting. After sanding, be sure to wipe it down very well with damp paper towels to remove the dust, and allow the dampness to dry before painting.
