I used this type of form on a small patio and stoop and it worked great. You can also do a little at a time as your budget allows (you can also sometimes buy torn or damaged bags of concrete at a reduced price, just ask!)

I like the colored concrete - really pushes it to the next level.
The best and cheapest IMO would have been to add a bunch of cement square or round large stepping stones or blocks and have the little stones around them. You can actually pour them yourself. Pavers would be nice too but more money and skill or equipment to properly install.
It appears that, that spot needs to be leveling off it looks higher than the lawn. Post a photo on OfferUp and Craigslist list for those free gravel rocks and they will haul away to save your back and search those same sites for low cost concrete blocks in your area.
