Since we don't know your growing zone, the best thing to do is go to your local plant nursery. They can assist you with picking out plants and shrubs that will do well in pots in the shade and semi-shade. You will also be looking at the plants to see if you really like them before buying.
Remember, plants in pots need more watering, will need fertilizer and need to be potted up into larger pots as they grow.

Non stop begonias are awesome for this. They’re bigger than the type you buy in flats, come in very nice colors. Works well with coleus, ivy and bacopa spilling over the sides.

Any that are sold as house plants would be a good choice.

If you buy plants at Home Depot and Lowes, the tags on the plants will tell you how much light that they need.

Hostas are great for my shaded area, but if you have deer, they will eat all of them
