Dry the skillet: Thoroughly dry the cast iron immediately with a clean dish towel or paper towels.
Hi Barbara!
Here's a link that gives you a step by step process on how to clean the rust out, reseason it and how to care for it so it doesn't happen again.

Wire wheel in a hand grinder tool works wonders, wear 👁 protection dust 😷 mask and 🧤 gloves.
Be sure to reseason the pan after you clean it up to keep the rust at bay!

One great thing about cast iron is that it is so forgiving. Scrub the pan with a Brillo Pad with Cleanser (or a scrub brush and powdered cleanser. It may take a lot of elbow grease. When you have removed all the rust you can, inside and out. Rinse the whole pot, several times, to remove any detergent. Then dry every little bit of the pot.
To season the pot my way (there are others), rub a chunk of pork (or bacon), beef fat, or vegetable oil all over the inside. Then put salt in your hand, and rub that all inside the pan. Place the pan in a 200 degree oven for two hours. When the time is up, leave the pan in the oven until both are cold. Then wipe the extra fat and salt off. The pan is ready to use. Keep cast iron dry and seasoned. ☺️
I use steel wool. Be sure to reseason it after.
