Southern Traditions: Why Did My Grandmas Sweep Their Yards?
My question as I watched these grandparents was always, "Why are you sweeping your yards, and why is there no grass around your house?" We have grass around ours.
We have the same problem in the cracks in our driveway. This is the best solution I know and believe me it does work. It is also not harsh for the environment or any children and pets in the neighborhood. Mix 1 gallon of white vinegar, 2 cups Epsom Salts, and 1/4 cup Dawn dish soap (the blue kind). Spray this mixture on the weeds after the dew is evaporated and by evening the weeds will be dead. We put it in the full length of the crack, to stop any new shoots we do not see readily. It keeps them gone for a good time. Eventually later in the summer you may need to apply again, but this will do the job. Be advised, do not get it on your flowers and wanted plants, it kills all plants.
Half fill a spray bottle with WATER. Add a cup of SALT and fill the rest with cheap WHITE VINEGAR and a couple of drops of Dawn (to grab onto weeds)- spray each time they appear and eventually NOTHING will grow there. Be careful where you spray this as you will kill anything that grows.
You will always get the weeds back, just because the weed seeds get spread by the wind. They will germinate anywhere that they get even just a little soil. over time, even the plastic will get soil over it and the seeds will germinate. About all you can do is kill them and pull the roots, if the roots aren't dead, the weed will come back.
As long as there is soil between the bricks, weeds and grass will root there. If you can keep it hosed completely out, they will not have the medium in which to root. If that is not possible, I have had much luck with spraying Roundup on the weeds and cracks of the sidewalk. I only need do that once in the spring. Roundup will kill the roots and make that soil unfit for seeds of any kind to sprout, for quite awhile. Do not use Roundup anywhere you want other plants to grow successfully.
I used some tar driveway repair stuff on mine.
Pour salt or vinegar on them.
I use a mixture of salt and water in a garden sprayer in my gravel bed. Saturate the bricks and weeds. Final suggestion would be to use landscape fabric instead of plastic under the bricks. Plastic even with holes may not let all water drain creating hazard.
Try pouring boiling water on them. It kills them instantly. If they come back, repeat. It doesn't cost you anything except your time.
II agree pull your bricks, level place a good treatment of what is referred to as soil sterilizer on top of that place landscape fabric, making sure to bring it up the edges to control and weeds which creep, layer in a 1/2in base of good quality contractors sand this will pack, where playground sand is a looser product. Lever and relay your bricks into your desired pattern, I prefer the interlocking herringbone pattern. Once complete spread 1/2-in of the sand mixture on top of your bricks then with a garden hose rinse the sand gently into between your bricks. That should secure them into place. Hint* for the bottom layer you can also use what's called a mirror mix it once wet will set the bricks into place firmly. I have done many hundreds of feet, it's a time consuming project but the pay off is re-use of the bricks and long lasting beauty.
