unplugged or out of Freon- Freon is the gas that makes the fridge cold. it comes in canisters. move all food stuffs to coolers with ice until you can get figured out if its a Freon issue. there may be a pin hole leak from the coils. the coils may need to be replaced. if you have a handy man they can replace the coils and fill with the Freon. my dad a diesel mechanic - did it a few times.
accidentally un plugged- plug in and add a block of ice to keep food cool until it catches up to the safe temp for fridge.
I guess they just get fed-up being left in the cold???????
It could be an electrical issue, a motor burn out, or multiple other things. A good investment would be a repair visit. But, first, check your circuit breaker.

The simplest possibility is that the freezer area needs defrosting. Most refrigerator/freezers have a pass through for the cold air but it can get clogged with ice. Also vacuum off the back or bottom area where the coils are located. Dust and pet hair accumulate here. If the coils can't expel the heat, it will stop cooling on high pressure cut off. If these don't work, you have a mechanical issue. This requires a technician because handling of refrigerant requires a certification.
Refrigerators also have several components, such as thermostats, timers, overload switches and fans, to facilitate the cooling process and keep everything working properly. Automatic-defrost units include heaters that cycle on and off automatically to prevent frost buildup. Failure of any of these components or systems can make your fridge stop working.
