Hello! What a lovely idea! Acrylics are the best paints to use. Paintbrushes don’t have to be anything fancy — craft stores and retailers sell the cheap, sponge variety brushes in packs of small, medium and large. The dollar store has then, too, along with small clay pots. Good luck and have fun!
I like this one..... the marbelizing is fun to do with old nail polish, just provide gloves for dipping and handling..... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RlmxnxgS7UU the paint looks like acrylic artists paint
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TT-mSRwNgG4 I would provide painters blue tape and let them do designs and then paint whole pot, rip off tape to reveal the design.... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TT-mSRwNgG4
You can also let them use modpodge, plaster of paris or Washi tape to decorate their pots.
Maybe Acrylic Paint or Chalk Paint with a Wax on top....................
Acrylic will work, and they could also use paint pens/markers. The pots can sprayed with a clear sealer.
Polka dots are fresh and go with any decor - traditional, modern, art deco, etc. You can decorate them with peel-off dots or make your own with the eraser end of a pencil or a toothpick or for "fuzzy" dots you can use Q-tips.
