Finishing a buffet I picked up a couple of dressers that I want to turn into buffets after I sand and paint them what type of finish do you put on the top so that they will be water resistant and or heat resistant

If you want a deep glass like finish, use epoxy. Otherwise a polyurethane finish will do. Always, no matter the finish use some sort of protection on wood from a hot pot and wipe water spills up as soon as possible. Good luck.

I agree, no matter what finish you use on top of the paint, you will need to protect the surface from heat by using a trivet or something underneath it. Nothing will protect the pain from heat if you put it directly on the surface of the buffets you are making.

  • Over the years my dad made my mom a number of buffet cabinets for our dining room. One now lives in my garage for tool storage and another in my kitchen for storage. To solve the hot / cold / spill issue, they always had a piece of glass (plexiglass will do) custom cut as a topper. You still need to use a trivits, but far less likely to mar the top of the buffet.
