A mix of different size and textures of stone might be nice
depending on your area.. as to the climate you can find plants that survive fine on normal rain etc. ask your local nursery or lowes.. etc. also you can add pots.. with fake flowers like i did for my barn since my dogs dig everything up... this worked great.
