I had an apple tree like that. I read in my garden book to cut a 1/4" strip of bark only 3/4 of the way around the tree about 2 feet up from the ground. DO NOT CUT AN ENTIRE CIRCLE, OR YOU WILL KILL THE TREE. Cut another strip a little lower with the non-cut part not in line with the other cut.
Is the tree planted in the lawn where lawn fertilizer was used?
