As to your soil question- I would suggest a personal consultation with your specific planting zone and soil condition perhaps soil test in mind.
A great resource that I have used and highly recommend .....is your local Cooperative extension. These offices are manned by a wonderful team of master gardeners that know your local situation quite well. There's also email ( submit a photo) Q&A resources that have helped my concerns and questions many times. Consider googling up your local extensions office.

Probably because there's lots of sand in the soil. It is hard to grow things in sandy soil.
Sandy, moist soil in very hot longer exsposure to the sun. Have you tried raised planter beds with top soil & planting soil for your plants. We have nothing but hard clay as you dig, so raising the soil with top & planting soil has helped grow beautiful plants & vegetables. A good water source is also needed! Mulching helps, fertilizer & plant food as needed!
I always tell my hubby, “one part water, one part sunshine & one part prayer!” Happy planting!
But not impossible. Check with local nurseries and cooperative extension offices.
this should give you some information without having to contact the extension service. https://www.fairchildgarden.org/home-gardening/gardening-how-tos/soils-media
? Maybe it's because it needs to have some compost added to it...........
I’m in St Petersbur, FL my “soil” is pure sand. I dig in bags of garden soil and mulch. You have to create the planting areas.
St Petersburg- ugh!
