I think that would work if you place it between the front entrance and the car port - it will connect both and create a natural pathway between your car and the front door.
I agree that it would look great. I think I would put one on either side of your front porch to really make a statement. Also, by putting it on both sides of the porch you would have not only the walkway to the carport, but also a seating area on the other side.
