Yes, people have done that however, I'm not sure it will help because she could dig under it or jump over it. Do you have another place where she CAN dig? Another option is to train your dog. Digging is a natural instinct for them. You can give him his or her own space to dig too. See if this helps.

I have a digger dog too. I deter her from areas with pepper flakes, or cayenne powder. Put it down before you let her in that area and she'll decide to leave it. This can take several rounds of conditioning. Neither if these will harm you critters. I learned this from a trainer.
The poo thing does work too most people with pets have extra. Incidentally, cinnamon didn't work at all- my silly girl loves it.
I would surround it with a circle brick floor and then add a bench that surrounds the tree making it wide enough so your dog can take a nap on it!!!
