The last time I had to replace them they broke off, the bulb broke into pieces and separated from the socket

Hi Diane,
First put on goggles to protect your eyes and gloves to protect your hands. Also turn off the power to that light. You should be able to use a pair of needle nose pliers to grab the center of the bulb and twist it out. If that doesn't work, another unique way is to cut a potato so that one end is larger - basically take the end off of the potato - then shove the potato into the socket. The potato will give you something to use to grip the bulb so you can get it out. Wishing you the best.
If the bulb broke in the socket..... FIRST turn off the power to the light switch.
... then cut a potato in half.... jam the potato into the socket and gently turn to remove the stem part of the light bulb... BE SURE the power to the light is OFF before you even try this... turn the breaker off if necessary.
