perennials come back every year BUT what I did was get a gardening catalog and see what they recommended for different areas of my property eg...shady or full sun and what area of the country for what thrives in certain temperatures etc they don't want their products to fail THEN went and found them at my local garden center (lowes etc.. ) my gardens are amazing

Since you do not say what growing zone you live in, go to your local plant nursery and talk to someone there. They will assist you with different plants that grow in your area and soil type.
Depends on where you are located, do you know your planting zone? In order to give you good advice knowing your planting zone and where in your yard you wish to plant (in sun or shade or partial sun/shade) would be beneficial
