How to Clean and Reseason a Rusty Cast Iron Pan
As I understand it A solution of salt and apple cider vinegar will dissolve rust. There are several YouTube videos on it.
have never tried it as I have A sandblast cabinet.
Apple vinegar will work but you need to let it set for a while, possibly overnight. Dump out vinegar next day and use a crumpled piece of aluminum foil and scrub.
If you resort to using a brillo pad, you will have to re-season the pan.
throw the pan into a fire, be it a bonfire, stove wood burning stove, what ever, ....leave it till fire burns down, take the pan out and wash with soap and water,or crumple aluminum foil and scrub.. then rub cooking oil into it....... have done the for years. brillo, vinegar
Go to HobbyFarms.com... they have the best information on how to clean, and maintain cast iron.
Note: I found that Crisco shortening worked best for me to re-season my cast iron.... I needed to repeat the seasoning process 4 times before I got the finish right.
