You may want to remove the soil where the path will be. You will have to dig out some to put down the blocks anyway to have them not be too high off the ground.
I agree, you'll need to set them into the ground so you don't trip on them. Some people level them in sand. You want to make sure they are level.
at hardware they hv this great pad like stuff you put on level soil then sand place stones n water
You need to lay down a firm base of 3-4 inches of sand (tamped) before laying any blocks.
You need to dig out the area double the thickness of the blocks. Lay down some landscape fabric to prevent weed growth and have drainage. Lay down sand over the fabric less the thickness of the blocks and level it. Then you can lay your blocks. Fill the gaps with sand sweeping it into every gap.
