It depends on what you keep in it, but there are lots of variations of organizers available on the web, or just get some pretty boxes at a good Dollar store.
Pill boxes for safety pins and paper clips, earring backs, etc.
You can even cut down the height of some of the small gift bags, folding the top down and taping it.
Does it have drawers, shelf? First thing to do is look at what you keep on it and get rid of things that don't need to be there, or that you don't use daily. If you have a shelf on room underneath the nightstand, consider a small storage piece, like a 2 drawer plastic container or a fabric bin. You can use that to store some items that you do use, but are maybe bulky or things you'd rather keep out of sight. I have a small wooden jewelry on mine that holds lots of little stuff plus my glasses. I also have a little cloth organizer that slips between the mattress and boxspring and hangs over the side of the bed where I keep remotes, tissues, and a book.

Make you own organizer using foam core board. Decide how many sections you want in the drawer and whether you need long sections, small ones, or a combination. Layout the sections so they are easy to get to—small ones in the front, large ones in the back.
You need a piece of foam board, some duct tape (decorative duct tape looks better), a ruler and pencil, an Exacto-type craft knife, and a metal straight edge (metal yardstick works well) to ensure the straightest cut, and a cutting board to protect your table or desk.
Measure the depth of your drawer; this is the widest every piece can be. Measure the width and length of the drawer. Cut your long pieces to fit tightly from one side to the other. Where you want two pieces to intersect make a cut from the bottom to the middle and the width of the foam board. Keep the cut narrow; the foam board will compress slightly. On the other intersecting piece make the same cut from the top to the middle. Make sure to measure and mark where these cuts will be on each piece. Once all cuts are made slide the pieces together at the cuts to make a grid. Make sure your grid will fit in the drawer.
To finish, fold a piece of duct tape in the middle, non-sicky side together and press the folded edge with your finger nail. (Lay down either wax paper or parchment to prevent the duct tape from sticking while doing this.) place the fold up against an inside corner of the grid so the foam board is covered from top to bottom and press in place. Open the fold and press the duct tape against the other piece of foam board. Do this on all sides of each intersection. You can also secure short pieces that do not intersect between longer ones using folded duct tape. Finally, cut strips of duct tape to cover the top of each short section of foam board, centering the tape on the top edge and pressing it down on either side. Cut strips of duct tape to cover the longest pieces of foam board. As before, center each strip, then make cuts on either side of each intersecting board. Cut away the small pieces at the intersection and fold down the longer sections. This will cover any cutting imperfections and give the divider a finished look. It's ready to go in the drawer. http://www.hawk-hill.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/04/blog_hh_drawer_bd_9695.jpg
I have found my messy night stands come from my personal habits of just not wanting to deal with stuff right away, such as mail, magazines, advertisements, glasses, keys... So, it gets plopped down on the nightstand until it becomes obnoxious and I "have to do something". I have to keep after myself to keep things tidied up or face this clutter that seems to never get responded to.
Organizers are good from the dollar stores for in-drawer items. There are jewelry racks and hooks for that. Keeping it simple is my best answer.
I am not a natural "organizer" myself - I like the results, but find it hard to get it done or keep it that way!
