Creating realistic wood grain can take years to master. There are a number of brushes needed depending on the type of wood: a small artist detail brush, a spalter, a toothed spalter, graining combs with wide and medium teeth, and cotton cloth.
First, do a search for photos of "wood grain pine" or "wood grain oak". You need to know how a particular wood looks in order to duplicate it. Second, do a search for "decorative paint technique: woodgraining". You should get many articles that detail mixing colors, using glaze, creating grain via brush and/or comb, etc. Read as many as you can, saving the best and most detailed to your favorites/bookmarks so you can refer to them later. Some people will use just acrylic paint and glaze, and others will use oil-based glaze. Generally the oil-base gives you more time to work. Working in the shade and when the temperature is low will also give more time to manipulate the glaze. Finally, take your time. First, practice on poster board. Paint an acrylic base coat in a light, yellowish brown. Make your mistakes here and learn from them.
