Do something with a retaining wall. I don't understand what you mean.
Pinterest is likely where you should be looking for decorating ideas. Here are some ideas for hanging string lights: https://www.pinterest.com/pin/576812664746656148/?lp=true
Where did you want to hang them? You can string them between trees, in trees and shrubs, off of a roof line, around a deck, and you could even lay them along the retaining wall. Some can be plugged in and others are battery operated. We would need more information about your retaining wall to know what you need to do so that we can advise you! Have fun with the birthday planning!
I would use stick-on hooks that have a cushy surface that is malleable and removable later, to spaces along the retaining wall for your string lights. These are available at the big box home centers or a well stocked local hardware store. Hope the party goes fabulously!
Attached is a link with ideas. If you bought the solar type you will have many options. If not you will be limited by the location of outdoor outlets. Hope this helps
