sprinkle on cayenne or red pepper flakes in the area will not hurt plants but keeps critters away
I was reading equal parts of dawn dish soap and hot sauce in a spray bottle will work for everything.
Maybe you could put skewers in the ground around them so that the squirrels don't have room to get comfortable? I don't know if squirrels are capable of pulling the skewers out, but if you get inexpensive ones, it might be worth a try.
