You should wait until late summer or early fall to transplant iris.
HI Rick. I am in WI and brought Irises that I dug up in AR. They were in bloom. I planted them and they did just fine. The first full year they didn't bloom but after that they did great!
I have dug up, divided and moved my irises at all different times of the year and havent had any issues with them. I just moved and divided a bed of irises that had flower buds on them. And the buds are still intact and opening up as normal. Just dont separate them as much when dividing to keep from disturbing the roots/rhisomes/bulbs depending on the type you have. Good luck
thank you all
I have wondered the same thing but then thought...when you buy iris at a greenhouse, they are either in bloom or about to bloom. So I just transplanted a clump this week..look a little sickly but perk up more every day..just keep them watered.
Iris are very hardy... in almost every place but here in AZ it is still cool enough to move them... just don't divide them too aggressively until fall.
