How to DIY Self watering bottles for potted plants?

I want to use some wine bottles to use in my potted plants when we are away for more than 3 days. Husband and I thought if we placed a small piece of pvc pipe to put the bottle into it might help. But the bottle emptied out within several hours. Maybe the pvc pipe wasn't a good idea???
Any ideas on how to make it so the water seeps out?
