Air is what causes tarnish.... if you do not intend to use it very often.... vacuum pack it... before storing it... just make sure it is completely dry.
To protect and preserve silver, proper care and storage are key. Wash pieces in warm, soapy water after each use. Be especially thorough if they held any foods that contained sulfides, such as eggs, salt, mustard, salad dressings, or tomatoes. Dry completely, then place the silver in a wooden chest with a protective lining, roll in a flannel flatware case, or wrap in an anti tarnish bag or cloth. Do not use newspaper, plastic, or rubber bands, which can cause damage.

There is fabric available that you can fold over or make a "pocket" for your silver item. Joann fabric carries it.
Fabric is called Pacific cloth, and it works. Also, look around yard sales or on e-bay for an old silver storage chest. I luckily found one for $.25 years ago.
My only son doesn't want my six place settings of sterling nor his great grandmother's service for 12 china which is nearly 100 yrs old nor the Depression glass crystal that I inherited. His loss.
It's a pity that this generation doesn't want the old things that make a table look lovely and will give memories to them and their children. What goes around comes around and maybe a future generation will appreciate the old sterling and china.

That fabric is great. Used it to reline the silverwarge drawer in my old, old buffet; just glued it over the very worn fabric that remained. Three M makes some paper appearing thingys that you can lay on the shelves where you store your larger silver pieces. It really works; just Google Three M.

They sell special fabric to wrap it in that prevents tarnishing. For silverware you can buy the boxes already lined with the special fabric.
