Any of a genus (Hosta) of Asian perennial herbaceous plants of the lily family with densely growing basal leaves and tall racemes of white or violet flowers — called also funkia, plantain lily.

A Hosta plant is a Plantain lily of the asparagaceae family. There are many kinds and are the most popular of all shade plants due to their abundant and varied leaves. They go dormant in the winter but come back early spring.

Hosta is a plant from Eastern Asia that has large wide leaves with a flower stalk that grows from the center of the plant. As for what it means, I don't think it means anything. They are shade tolerant and do well in the sun.

Hostas are great if you have shady areas where the won't get much afternoon sun. They are very drought tolerant and really fill in over time.
