your pot needs to hold a minimum of 5 gallons of potting mix , and be at least 12 inches tall. be prepared to add small does of magnesium aka Epsom salt as the flowers start to bloom. you may need to hand pollinate your plants, if you see black or brown spots on the end of the tomato, a hand full of garden lime aka calcium. if you have only 1 or 2 plants give them 2 tums tabs each. tums are calcium.

I use the biggest pots I can find. Take the drain thing off the bottom so that it drains really well. Make sure there are drainage holes. I fill mine with potting soil and some peat moss mixed in. The suggestion Dfm gave are all good. The only thing I did different was instead of adding the lime when you notice blossom end rot was that I found a real good calcium spray at my local greenhouse that you spray on the leaves and it gets into the plant quicker and prevents more end rot. Blossom end rot is very common on tomatoes in pots since the nutrients get washed out rather quickly since they need more water than tomatoes planted in the soil. When it is really hot outside I watered mine at least twice a day or they wilted. I used a extended release tomato and vegetable fertilizer. Make sure you have support for the plant. My patio early girl tomato I put in a pot got five foot high. I had to use a short ladder to get to the top of the plant to pick tomatoes. I must have gotten close to a hundred tomatoes before the first frost did it in.
