Hot Pepper flakes sprinkled around the plant, and you can make a spray too -- blend into a FINE powder a couple of tablespoons of pepper flakes and a cup of water until totally blended - use a spray bottle to spritz the plants -- doesn't have the salt, vinegar, etc. that 'hot pepper sauce' has that can damage your plants ... if your sprayer won't handle the ground up pepper - put into a salt shaker or make a 'shaker' with a ball jar lid with FINE!! holes poked with small nail.
Squirrels and birds can be real problems around edible plants and fruits. Net what you can and use motion detection sprinklers. It will shoo them away. Good luck.
