we only have an acre...but if it was me..Id be planting food! Fruit trees and a garden!
Before focusing on either interior design or exterior landscaping or design, spend at least a few weeks really living in the space and focusing on how you envision yourself using it in the future. What will your family's needs be? Do you have small children? Pets or animals? Do you envision strolling through expansive country gardens, relaxing by a country pool or pond, or collecting chicken eggs every day? With that much acreage, there is a lot of opportunity. Keep in mind the weather and how much maintenance different projects will need over the years. Everyone's lifestyle is different.
I also have a really old farmhouse and have been working on renovating and customizing for 6 years. For me, top must have is a koi pond in any backyard. Privacy is also important. We had an above ground pool and realized we only swim once a year so plan on replacing it with a spa. A greenhouse is important to me. I wanted a walking labyrinth, so I made one out of pebbles and mortar in a mosaic pattern. We have an area for our dogs to safely play without destroying our gardens. We also have a very safe kid play area with a slide and fort we designed ourselves to fit the space. We have an area set aside for chickens in the future, we plan to build a really long pergola this summer and gazebo. We also have expansive gardens throughout.
A heads up: the more irrigation you have, the more maintenance it will need each year. I love the established trees in your yard. They would look great with rock border gardens around each tree base and a winding pathway between them. If you are really busy, or travel a lot, you will need to keep things lower maintenance. Buy sun loving perennials that thrive in your grow zone and fill you with joy when you see them in the store.
As far as interior design goes, what do you need? Would you thrive in a craft nook? Do you crave a home office? Would you love a safe play area for littles? Do you need a library with a chaise lounge to relax on while you read? Do you need a quiet nook to reflect and meditate full of vibrant indoor plants and zen candles, just to unwind after a busy day? You know, there are so many ideas out there. Imho, your home should be a reflection of your soul and ultimately fit into your personal lifestyle needs. Good luck!
