You need to improve the quality of the soil before you can expect to grow a healthy lawn. Grass NEEDS adequate nutrition (nitrogen), permeable soil (contains humus so water can permeate down to the roots and allow oxygen to enter and feed the micro-organisms). Treat your yard like you are going to grow a crop of hay in a field --- use a rototiller and plow the top three of four inches of soil to loosen the dirt so the seed you sow will have a seed bed in which to grow properly, i.e., sprout and have room to spread and grow deep into the soil. Talk to your local County Agriculture Agent; His office has a wealth of pamphlets, booklets and other printed instructions on how to establish a healthy lawn. But first, get the soil in your lawn tested to find out what kind of fertilizer to apply and/or other kinds of mineral amendments to add to change the ph of the soil for the kind of grass you hope to grow. It won't be a one day, or easy, experience but will be well worth the hard labor once the lawn is up and growing.
I did have have my yard levelled of with top soil when I moved into the house. i gather you are saying that I should still have my soil tested. Re: rototilling.....I assume you mean to do this through the crappy grass?
I have put down "grass" soil, fertilizer along with grass seeds every year but the new growth has been sporadic. The company said that once the new grass took hold it would squeeze out the weeds. I think the opposite happened.
I haven't heard of a County Agro Agent but will investigate. I get the concept of starting with the basics. Thank you for your advice.
