I primed the bathroom walls before I papered them 14 yrs ago when I built the house and I want to paint them now. Will they need to sanded once I remove the paper for the best outcome to have smooth paint job?

Hi Connie, it will really depend on what kind of shape the walls are in once you remove the paper. Because you primed them the glue might come right off. I have seen DIYers sand the glue before painting but the more common method is just a big sponge and hot water to "wipe" the glue off totally.

You may be able to wash the glue residue off, but using a power sander would probably be easier.

Your best bet to remove wallpaper is steam. You can buy a steamer for that purpose. You can also wipe with warm water and remove but Its messier. Unless the plaster is coming off the walls with the paper you can prime it with paint .... after washing down using Spic and Span for instance . Also fill any holes with spackle or the like. Good luck!!

I use a 50/50 mix of vinegar and hot water to remove wallpaper. Same mixture to wash the glue residue off the walls. If the walls were smooth when you put the wallpaper up they should be smooth when you remove it. Prime and paint.

Connie, not knowing the type of primer you used, I use a hair dryer set at high heat to remove all kinds of things. Try that by tearing a small piece to get started, then blow the hot air down into the wallpaper and peel off.
