Go to the thrift store, restore, yard sales and find some storage tubs, or large buckets. Drill some holes in the bottom for drainage. I mix 1/2 and 1/2 garden soil with potting soil. Veggies grow well in plastic containers, but you must remember to keep them watered well when it's not raining. They dry out faster than if they were in the ground.
Make sure you know the mature size of the plants you want to plant. If you look at seed packets, some of them will tell you how many plants you can put in what size pot. For tomatoes, You will need a big pot to handle the mature size, etc. In a twenty to twenty-five inch pot, I successfully grew six leaf lettuce plants and one orange bell pepper in the middle. In the same size pot, I grew one patio early girl tomato that ended up being five feet high. I tend to use large pots for everything, my herbs are all in ten to twelve inch pots and I get enough herbs to last all summer and dry or freeze the rest, and they last until my this years plants are big enough to start picking for cooking. My basil was three feet high!
Avoid using loam/soil from your yard , it does not drain properly in pots . Buy potting mix , many types avail , designed to use for growing plants in containers to avoid root rot . Drainage holes also necessary . Many mixes come w/ fertilizer mixed in , if not , no big deal , Miracle-Grow can be used regularly while watering or Espoma makes great organic products like Plant-Tone or Tomato-Tone . Follow directions EXACTLY as specified ! More isn't always better .... it can burn/kill plants . Avoid getting fertilizer on foliage if possible . In hot weather pots usually need water daily , sometimes twice if very not in late summer as roots become more dense . I put 1 tomato plant in a pot approx 18"T X 30"W just about the right size . Could use 5 gal pail w/ holes drilled , might be top heavy . Be sure to drill drainage holes ! Good Planting !
